RFID FAQ‎ > ‎

How do I tag my item with RFID?

The following is a guide on how to track each item with RFID. Each item is linked to it's own page with more tagging information.

The most important aspect is the type of material being tagged, so we broke it into raw material types. A secondary aspect is the type of item. For instance, an automobile will be traveling vast distances and should probably be tagged with a GPS/Cellular based RFID tag.

Raw Material - This is the basic material being tagged.
Typically Found In -- Where this material is primarily found.
RF Penetration -- % of RF signal that passes through this material. This means the the item can be used as a container if it's near 100%.

Each raw material and item has it's own web page devoted to tagging it and the issues associated with that item.

Raw Material Typically found in   RF Penetration
Cardboard Boxes 95% - Dry Cardboard
20% - Wet Cardboard

GlassCar / Truck
Wine

95% transparency to RF signal, however, most glass surfaces will attenuate signal and reduce the read range by 70% for most RF tags. Specifically tuned tags should be used for mounting directly on glass.
Metal  PC's
Drums
Cars / Trucks
Pipe

0% - Metal can not be penetrated. Requires special tags.
Plastic
Rubber
Laptops
Pallet
PC's

95% - Most plastics.
Occasionally, a coated plastic/rubber will contain high carbon concentrate that can reduce range to zero.

Liquid         Humans
Animals
Water Bottles
Oil Bottles
Wine

10% - Absorbs RF in area and reduces read range dramatically.
Wood Pallet 80% - Dry Wood
10% - Wet Wood
