How can I determine a good place to tag my assets?

When tagging assets or items, it is important to consider the best location to place your tags. Many RFID tags do not work on or around metal, few tags work near liquids. Here are a few things to consider:
  • What materials are contained in my asset? Are there plastic, cardboard, paper or wood areas of my asset that can be tagged? Read How do I tag my item with RFID? for more information.

  • Does my tag need to be hidden? Most tags can be placed inside a box or case as long as there is no metal blocking its view of the reader. Manufacturers should consider embedding Generation 2 RFID labels into all of their products.

  • Where will the asset be placed? If you have an entire inventory of assets that are stored on shelves you should place the RFID tag in a position that will be facing out when the item is on a shelf. RFID tagged items placed on shelves can be easily inventoried using a handheld inventory management system.

Be sure to test your tagged assets to ensure a good read rate.
